Auditioning by DVD
Stacey MacNaught |
For many dance students the start of the new year spells auditions for places on dance courses all over the country, and even all over the world. For more prestigious training institutions, such as those for classical ballet courses, their places are appealing to both home and internationally based students who wish to train on their course. Conservatories such as The Royal Ballet School are made up of students from all over the world.
For students wishing to further their dance training, there is much to be gained from attending a summer school before gaining a place in a full-time dance school. However these goals require auditions, even from those who wish to attend from the other side of the world. For students who are too far away to even travel to audition, more and more training institutions accept a certain number of filmed applications.
Auditioning via DVD is becoming much more commonplace. The Royal Ballet School in London now considers up to 100 DVD auditions from students each year, giving a wider variety of students the chance to formally 'audition'. Auditioning via DVD requires preparation, planning and research, firstly research around your chosen dance school to see if it seems like the right place to further your training, and secondly how you can give yourself the best possible chance - first impressions count for a lot in order to secure your future training end even career.
The DVD must be of the highest quality possible in order to show your dancing ability. Many schools offer guidance regarding quality, format and content of your DVD application but this can differ between schools. It is important to note this carefully because each audition may require something different from your DVD application, and not following procedures may jeopardise your place.
Above all, show the audition panel that you are exactly what they are looking for. Believe in yourself! At the end of the audition leave a great impression, thank the panel and the accompanist if there is one. Whatever way you decide to audition Dancewear Central will always be here to help with your audition, training or performance dancewear and footwear.
