Theatre has always held a special place in British culture. Whether it's a family trip to see a big West End musical or a night out at a local playhouse, the stage still pulls a crowd and the search data backs that up.
We wanted to find out just how much interest there is in UK theatre right now, so we pulled together search volume data for London and West End venues, the shows and musicals people are searching for most, and how the biggest theatres are performing on social media. Here's what we found in our round up of UK Theatre Statistics 2026.
A quick look at the stats
- Over 37 million people attended theatres in the UK in 2025
- 17.64 million of those visits were in the West End alone, around 3 million more than Broadway
- The Lyceum Theatre is the most searched-for London theatre so far in 2026, and was also the most searched-for in the whole of 2025
- Matilda the Musical has racked up over 4.5 million searches since June 2022, more than any other West End musical
- Wicked is the most searched-for show of the last 12 months, averaging 192,000 searches a month
- The Royal Ballet and Opera has the biggest Instagram following of any UK theatre, with 1.6 million followers
How many people actually go to the theatre?
Theatre attendance in the UK remains huge. Over 37 million people went to a show somewhere in the country in 2025, and West End venues alone accounted for 17.64 million of those visits, comfortably more than Broadway managed over the same period.
To give these numbers even more context, West End venues alone saw more than 2 million more visitors than every single English Premier League football match combined in 2025.
It's a reminder that, for all the noise around streaming and nights in, live theatre is still drawing a genuinely mass audience.
The most searched-for theatres in London and the West End
To find out which venues Brits are most interested in, we took every theatre listed on londontheatre.co.uk and looked at how many monthly searches each one gets.
Top 5 most searched London theatres, January to August 2026:
| Rank | Theatre | Searches |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lyceum Theatre | 1,100,000 |
| 2 | Drury Lane Theatre Royal | 960,500 |
| 3 | London Coliseum | 885,500 |
| 4 | His Majesty's Theatre | 841,000 |
| 5 | Royal Opera House | 810,500 |
The Lyceum Theatre, current home of The Lion King, is the runaway favourite so far this year, and it topped the list for the whole of 2025 too. That's a real changing of the guard: back in 2024, the Lyceum was only the second most searched-for venue, sitting behind the Royal Opera House. By the end of 2025, it had overtaken it by close to a million searches.
Throughout 2024, 2025 and so far in 2026, only twelve theatres made the top ten in any of those years and - year-on-year - all but one showed a large increase in searches between 2024 and 2025, most notably:
- Lyceum Theatre: +995,000
- Drury Lane Theatre Royal: +822,100
- Dominion Theatre: +688,000
- His Majesty’s Theatre: +730,000
- Royal Opera House: -32,000, the only one of the twelve to see a dip

Since we don’t yet have a full picture for 2026, we also compared how these same theatres have fared by comparing search data for January to August for 2025 and 2026.
Looking at these numbers, we see a continuation in the drop in searches for the Royal Opera House. Four other theatres saw drops of 99,000 searches or higher. Just over half (7 out of 12) of the venues saw an increase in searches throughout this period, with the Gillian Lynne Theatre showing the largest increase at 102,800, closely followed by the London Coliseum and Drury Lane Theatre Royal.
- Gillian Lynne Theatre: +102,800
- London Coliseum: +99,500
- Drury Lane Theatre Royal: +96,900
- Adelphi Theatre: -160,000
- Dominion Theatre: -158,500
- Prince Edward Theatre: -105,800

The most searched-for shows right now
We also looked at which individual shows people are searching for most, averaged over the last 12 months. Wicked comes out well ahead of the pack.
| Rank | Show | Average Monthly Searches |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wicked | 192,000 |
| 2 | Hamilton | 156,000 |
| 3 | Mean Girls | 122,000 |
| 4 | Mamma Mia! | 118,000 |
| 5 | Operation Mincemeat | 69,400 |
| 6 | Hadestown | 68,800 |
| 7 | Matilda the Musical | 66,300 |
| 8 | Romeo & Juliet | 56,600 |
| 9 | Cabaret | 39,900 |
| 10 | Six | 32,900 |
Worth noting that not every one of these searches is necessarily someone hunting for tickets. Terms like “Wicked” or “Six” will pick up some searches for books, films and even irrelevant generic searches too. Even so, Wicked's lead is striking, with more than 40,000 more searches on average over second placed “Hamilton” in the 12 months up until the end of August 2026.
The most searched-for West End musicals since 2022
Individual show titles only tell part of the story, so we also looked specifically at musicals. Taking every musical listed as running in the West End as of June 2026, we tracked search volumes for each one going back to June 2022 (adding "musical" to the search term where the title alone wasn't specific enough).
Matilda the Musical is the clear winner, with almost 5 million searches over the four-year period. Six the Musical comes second with just over 3 million, and the two of them are miles ahead of the rest of the field. Third place goes to Paddington with just under 2 million and fourth place to Kinky Boots with just under 1.5 million searched in total.
Top 10 most searched West End musicals, June 2022 to August 2026:
| Rank | Show | Average Monthly Searches |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Matilda | 4,557,600 |
| 2 | Six | 3,032,500 |
| 3 | Paddington | 1,969,580 |
| 4 | Kinky Boots | 1,496,000 |
| 5 | Hamilton | 911,700 |
| 6 | Wicked | 899,800 |
| 7 | Moulin Rouge | 556,800 |
| 8 | Oliver! | 513,100 |
| 9 | The Lion King | 488,000 |
| 10 | Mamma Mia! | 432,900 |

Matilda's dominance is especially interesting given it's been running since 2011. Longevity clearly hasn't dulled the appetite for it, and it's still pulling in nearly double the search volume of Six, despite Six being one of the most popular newer arrivals on the West End scene.
Which theatres have the biggest social media following?
Search volume shows what people are actively looking for, but social media following is a good indicator of a theatre's wider brand and audience loyalty. So we looked at Instagram follower counts for UK theatres.

In a nutshell
However you measure it, whether that's ticket sales, search interest or social media reach, UK theatre is thriving. The Lyceum's rise to the top of the search rankings shows just how quickly audience interest can shift, while Matilda's staying power proves that some shows simply don't lose their pull. And with London venues still dominating both search and social media, it's clear the West End remains the beating heart of British theatre, even as regional venues build loyal followings of their own.
Caveats and Sources
Search Volumes were taken from kwfinder.com and show monthly averages as recorded by their site.
For theatres, we took search volumes for the theatre names, plus the word “theatre”, unless the word “theatre” already appears in their name.
Similarly for musicals: unless the musical already contained the word “musical”, search volumes reflect the musical name plus the word “musical”. For example: “Wicked the musical”
