Real Men Dance!
It’s Valentine’s Day but forget the chocolates, roses and teddy bears. When you ask someone what their must have quality in a partner is- isn’t the answer always a good sense of fun??? The perfect Valentines therefore, should be something that makes them laugh, add a little cha-cha and you are on to a winner, so why not try the new British comedy Cuban Fury. Although you are at risk of your better half falling head over heels for Nick Frost instead, because as you know ‘all girls love a man who can dance’!
After unprecedented success with Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Paul Nick Frost latest film is absent of all zombies and aliens. Instead it follows the story of Bruce Garrett the boy with fire in his heels who abandons his sequin covered salsa career after a bullying incident. Twenty-two years he falls in love with his new boss and takes up salsa again in order to woe the girl, and overcome his rival and work colleague Drew played by Chris O’Dowd. Although Frost has not completely abandoned his fellow actor and best friend Simon Pegg who plays a cameo role interrupting Frost and O’Dowd’s car park Salsa off.
Cuban Fury has everything a good Rom-Com needs: a star studded cast including Olivia Colman, Rashida Jones, Kayvan Novak and Ian McShane; three hundred of Europe’s best Salsa dancers, a high-rise car park Salsa off and a ‘show-stopping sequined finale’. Between the extremely camp Iranian dancer and Nick Frost’s hilarious attempt at impersonating an eagle however, the film does address some of the more serious issues associated with the dance world. As we have seen recently with the Channel 4 series Big Ballet, there continues to be a lot of prejudice against those who aren’t considered to be the right size for dancing. Indeed in many of the interviews about the film Frost has spoken about ‘the stigma attached to being a lump who can dance’. The film also promotes the idea that ‘real men dance’ contributing to the work done by programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing to encourage more men to get involved in dancing. So as well as being great fun this film tackles both problems head on.
