Precious has been dancing professionally with the English National Ballet for the last 3 years and has had a love of ballet since she was 10. We caught up with her while she was on tour with the company in Japan to discuss her career and her dance bag essentials…
When did you start dancing?
I started because my mother signed me up for creative movement classes when I was about 6. I did tap and jazz until I was about 9, then I focussed on classical dance forms. It took off from there and I really fell in love with ballet at the age of 10.
How long is a working day for you?
During rehearsal periods we work from 10.15am to 6.30pm. If we’re in a show period we usually start later at around 11am and finish the shows anywhere from between 9.30pm and 10.30pm. It can be a long day!
How many days a week do you work?
I work 5.5 days a week. We do a half day on a Saturday and have a Sunday off.
What do you do to relax?
I love going for long walks, reading, meditating, getting creative in the kitchen and of course hanging out with friends.
What do you hope to achieve I your career within the next 5 years?
I want to perform more neoclassical ballets in general. And so more expressive works like Pina Bausch Rite of Spring. I performed it in Spring 2017 and it literally changed my life dancing in the soil. I felt so grounded and somehow deeply connected to everyone on stage.
What one piece of advice would you give an aspiring ballerina?
Have belief and confidence in your uniqueness. When you fully embrace who you are, you can really develop yourself and let your identity come through in your dancing.
