Aladdin confirmed for the West End
Disney recently announced that the Tony Award-winning new musical Aladdin will hold its West End premiere on 9 June 2016 at the Prince Edward Theatre, with previews from Friday 27 May.
With the West End premiere confirmed for the show, tickets will go on sale to the general public on 23 November 2015. Tickets for the initial booking period are available for performances up to and including 1 October 2016. While full casting will be announced in due course, it has also been confirmed that Broadway cast member Trevor Dion Nicholas will make his London stage debut as Genie.
23 years after the Aladdin tale became the biggest movie of the year all over the world in 1992, Casey Nicholaw’s production will delight new audiences in the capital in its new home of Cameron Mackintosh’s Prince Edward Theatre. Now in its second record-breaking year on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where it has been seen by more than one million people, Aladdin opened at Tokyo’s Dentsu Shiki Theatre Umi in May 2015, will have its European premiere in December 2015 at the Stage Theatre Neue Flora, Hamburg, as well as opening in Sydney, Australia in 2016.
As another product of Disney Theatrical Productions - also the producer of The Lion King - Aladdin features the much-loved songs from the 1992 animated film as well as new music written by Tony, Olivier and eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken. With lyrics from Olivier Award and two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman, three-time Tony and Olivier Award, three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice, and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin, and a book by Beguelin, Aladdin is directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Nicholaw, also responsible for The Book of Mormon. With a fantastic creative team the show looks to be a great success.
