What to wear to ballet class

Congratulations on enrolling your daughter for ballet lessons! Even if they don’t become the next star of the Royal Ballet, we guarantee they will gain so much more than simply learning to dance by attending these classes.

As we approach the new term, many parents will have children attending dance classes for the first time. To help you with the essentials your child will need for class, we thought it might be helpful to put together some suggestions from the Dancewear Central catalogue.

We advise checking with the school at which your daughter has just enrolled: do they have a set school uniform, any recommendations for uniform, or is it entirely your own choice? Your teacher will be able to help you with this.

Leotards and Tutus

Ballet leotards and tutus come in many different designs, colours and fits. Leotards can give a more classical look than a tutu and suggest a more serious-minded dancer, as they are typically worn by older, more advanced students. However, the tutu is great for pre-school classes as there are lots of fun designs available that incorporate frills, bows and glitter.

Dancewear Central recommends:

Roch Valley Short Sleeve Lycra Leotard With Skirt in 5 colours

This is a great basic leotard with an attached skirt. It is available in a wide range of colours. The skirt is made from the same quality of material as the body (unlike some more delicate fabrics, which can crease and pluck easily). The short sleeve style of this leotard is attractive, allowing for a little extra warmth on the shoulders (it is also available in sleeveless).

Roch Valley Emilie Matte Lycra Sleeveless Skirted Leotard

Available in pink and lilac, this leotard also has an attached skirt, which is in the same material as the body. Ballet leotards made in matte nylon/Lycra are popular at the moment owing to their long-lasting colours and lovely soft feel. It has a flattering sweetheart neckline with a small gathered ruche – it is fully front lined for comfort, also. The attached skirt is great for younger students as it will fit perfectly, preventing the skirt from falling down their tummy as they dance!

Capezio Fairy Petal Tutu Skirt

Made from stiff-layered tulle, but with a delicate appearance, this tutu is full and frilly. The flower petals add a subtle twist to the classic young child’s tutu. As a separate tutu skirt in a traditional ballet pink, it can easily be paired with a wide range of leotards to create a unique combination.

Tights and Socks

For comfort and warmth, ballet socks and tights are an essential. Ballet tights are great for winter months, while socks are a staple for any budding ballerina.

Dancewear Central recommends:

Roch Valley 40 denier ballet tights in pink, white and black

A great pair of ballet tights in a soft pink colour. Being 40 denier, they provide comfort and flexibility while remaining lightweight. Available in sizes from young child to adult.

Silky ballet socks in pink, white and black

Available in a range of childrens’ sizes, they are durable and comfortable to wear.

Ballet Shoes

The most important – and treasured! – item in any dancer’s bag are their ballet shoes. There are a wide range of materials and fits to choose from. Ballet shoes are traditionally available in leather, satin and canvas. More recently, shoes with patterned soles and (particularly with young students) glittery ballet shoes have become popular. Ballet shoes provide support and comfort for the dancer and can also assist with technique and alignment.

When choosing ballet shoes for your child, fit is of great importance. Although you might allow for growing room in their day-to-day shoes, ballet shoes shouldn’t have this – they need to be a close fit so that your child doesn’t risk tripping up over excess shoe while dancing. If the shoe is too large, the foot can also begin to move around inside the shoe, allowing the foot to rest in unsupported positions. The dance teacher probably can’t see and correct this because of all the excess material.

Dancewear Central recommends:

Roch Valley Full sole premium satin shoe

This is a standard ballet shoe design, used by both beginners and advanced dancers. Ballet shoes made of satin are used by students for class, examinations or performances. Satin shoes give a beautiful line to the foot, highlighting the arch when the foot is pointed. Your child’s ‘good toes’ will look very good indeed!

Bloch girls sparkle ballet shoe

Did someone say twinkle toes?! Allow your child to stand out in class with these magical sparkly ballet shoes, which look adorable when matched with a tutu. They are available in two colours: pink glitter and gold glitter.

Hair Accessories

Ballet dancers always have immaculately-styled hair in a ballet bun. Don’t worry if you’re not sure how to do a ballet bun – have you seen our video tutorial showing how to make the perfect ballet bun? Check it out for an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide. Here are some of the accessories needed to make that perfect bun.

Dancewear Central recommends:

Bunheads 2 inch hair pins

Bunheads 2-inch Hairpins are available to suit all hair colours (for longer and thicker hair, Bunheads also make 3-inch hairpins). If hair is short or fine, Bunheads Bobby Pins can be used to make a ballet bun instead of hairpins – or simply to neaten up fly-away hair for anyone. These bobby pins are available in a wide range of colours, too.

Bunheads Bun nets

While invisible to the audience, ballet dancers always use bun nets to keep hair neat and tidy (if you’re unsure how they are used, you can see one in our online tutorial). Available in several colours, and with three nets in each pack, they are great value for money.

Why not check out our wide array of hair accessories, ranging from sparkly clips to colourful headbands, to add that finishing touch to your child’s ballet uniform?
